Zeefuik, who was given his senior debut at PSV Eindhoven by current Everton manager Ronald Koeman and spent a season on loan in Scotland, reportedly needed cash to pay for an operation for his lad.
Dutch sports website sportnieuws claim Zeefuik went on to spend two days in a Turkish jail for his actions.
A family member is quoted as saying: “Genero was not paid any salary for seven months, which is quite a big sum.
“When you have tried everything to get the money, which is his right, and you continue to live off your savings, you are slowly getting desperate.”

The relative allegedly explained that Zeefuik stole one trophy to show the club he was getting “really tired” of the situation.
They added: “In total, he spent one hour at a police station but when the police heard his side of the story they fully understood and he could leave immediately.”
Zeefuik, now a free agent, is reportedly lodging a complaint with Fifa over his salary dispute.
