Hodgson has already been left reeling by Wilfried Zaha picking up a knee injury – and now must cope without Speroni.

Speroni, 38, also picked up a knee injury in training and further tests have shown he will not be back until April.

Palace were trying to sign Getafe keeper Vicente Guaita during the January window but failed to complete a mid-season deal but will land him in the summer.

They are paying the price now with injury to Speroni, with the Argentinian veteran winning his place back in December.

Wilfried Zaha hopes to return to action in a month.

Yet the Crystal Palace star, who injured his knee against Newcastle on Sunday, has been warned it could take up to six weeks before he is playing in the Premier League.

Yet the news is still not as bad as it could have been for relegation-threatened Palace who will have their best player back for the crucial run-in.

Zaha, 25,has injured the outside of his knee so the damage is not serious.

He is hoping to be fit for the March 10 trip to Chelsea but looks certain to be back for the March 31 clash with Liverpool.

Palace are currently 14th but only three points above the relegation zone and they face Everton this weekend.
