And after years of watching young Ronaldo develop into the player he is today, Ferdinand felt compelled to ask the 32-year-old what the secret is of his incredible scoring tally.
Ferdinand said on BT Sport: “You can see this guy is relentless, I spoke to him during the week, [I asked] ‘What is it that makes you, and got you where you are?’
“Hard work and determination is all he said, nothing else. And it’s true, the basics have got him where he is and the talent separates him.

“You can’t say enough about the likes of him in today’s game. When he retires we will really understand what this guy has done for football – 41 hat tricks!”
The pair worked together at United, where Ronaldo and Ferdinand won the Champions League together in 2008.
But since then the Madeira-born forward has gone on to another level, achieving two more European crowns for his club.
