Daei played for Iran from 1993 to 2006 and played 149 times which saw him help his country to two World Cup finals.

He was snapped up by Bayern Munich in 1998 but lasted just one season before spells with Hertha Berlin and Al Shabab.

Reigning Ballon d’Or and Fifa ‘The Best’ winner Ronaldo was playing his first-ever international match in his hometown of Madeira just a day before the local airport was to be officially named after him.

Portugal led through Ronaldo’s 18th-minute strike before a Andreas Granqvist own goal doubled their lead.

But a Viktor Claesson brace brought Sweden back level before Cavaco Cancelo’s injury-time own goal secured the comeback.
