Manchester United defender Chris Smalling takes down Newcastle’s Dwight Gayle in the box but penalty isn’t awarded… and fans are NOT happy

NEWCASTLE fans are seething after being denied a penalty in their game against Manchester United on Sunday.

Dwight Gayle received the ball on the edge of the box and after pushing it past Smalling, the England defender stuck out a leg and brought him down.

Supporters on Twitter weren’t happy with Craig Pawson’s decision, with some calling for VAR to be used.

User Syheatz wrote: “Where’s VAR when you need it hey? #NUFC Penalty all day.”

United have been on top with the lion’s share of possession, but can’t get the ball past Newcastle’s impressive new keeper Martin Dubravka.

The Toon also had a few chances of their own early on, with the best chance of the half falling to Anthony Martial who’s went one-on-one and had his effort saved by the Newcastle goalie.

If Newcastle fail to get a result they may find themselves in the relegation places with just 11 games to go in the Premier League season.

Rafa Benitez will have a job on his hands to keep them up, but should be boosted by loan signings of Islam Slimani and Kenedy.
