It was due to be completed last week, but it has dragged on until deadline day today.

Conte wanted to keep Cuadrado in his squad, but the Colombian international is favouring a move back to Serie A, where he starred for Fiorentina before joining Chelsea in January 2014.

However, he was used infrequently by Jose Mourinho and spent last season on loan at Juventus, where he impressed as they won the Italian title yet again.

Conte is a fan of the winger having been beaten by Chelsea to his signature when was in charge of Juve And now at Chelsea he faces the prospect of losing him again despite insisting he wanted to keep him.

Cuadrado has not played at all this season and the deal will represent money back for the Londoners and money to balance some of their summer spending.

They are also trying to add to their squad, including a shock £32m bid for former Blues defender David Luiz, who left for PSG for £50m in June 2014.

Conte has had a frustrating time trying to find a centre-back, having had bids turned down for Alessio Romagnoli at AC Milan and Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly.
