Chelsea transfer news: Blues look to smash club-record by bidding £60million for defender Kalidou Koulibaly

CHELSEA have made a sensational £60million bid for Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly – a move that will smash their club-record signing.

Boss Antonio Conte is determined to land the centre back and has already seen a £48m bid rejected for the 25-year-old.

Koulibaly was one of the stand-out players in Serie A last season

But the Italian boss has returned with an offer he believes is too good to refuse and according to the Telegraph, he is confident in landing his man.

If Koulibaly does put pen-to-paper, it will eclipse the £50m Chelsea paid for Fernando Torres in 2011.

With Kurt Zouma out until the new year, Conte was in the market for a new defender so he can move back to his favoured three at the back formation – as he did at Juventus and with Italy.

However Conte’s statement of intent also casts doubts over the futures of English duo Gary Cahill and John Terry with competition for places set to increase.

Koulibaly was relatively unknown across Europe until he impressed with dominating performances in Serie A last season and Conte hopes he can bring his form to the Premier League.

It is believed that the manager hasn’t given up on his chase for Everton forward Romelu Lukaku.

The Blues have offered Loic Remy in an attempt to land the Belgian striker but Ronald Koeman is determined to keep hold of his key player.
