Hudson was actually given the last rights in hospital in 1997 after being run over while out for a walk, and has been forced to undergo a series of operations since the accident.
And two years ago, the ex-Stoke and Arsenal star was dealt a new blow when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Former Stoke teammate Terry Conroy said: “Thank goodness the news sounds so encouraging, and obviously all our thoughts are with Alan.”

Hudson began his career at Stamford Bridge where he was part of the famous Chelsea side who won the 1971 European Cup-Winners Cup.
He then spent two years at Stoke, during which time he won both his two senior England caps, before returning to London to join Arsenal in 1976.
Hudson then enjoyed five years playing in America for Seattle Sounders and Cleveland Force, eventually hanging up his boots in 1985 after another spell at Stoke.
