Champions League: Uefa in a muddle after being accused of favouring Barcelona ahead of Madrid in Champions League draw

UEFA have once again been accused of favouring Barcelona, following an odd mishap in their image explaining what time the Champions League draw will take place at.

Europe’s governing body — which has earned the nickname Uefalona by some due to their supposed bias towards the Catalan — had tweeted a world map with the local time for the group stage draw.

England’s timezone was represented by London (17:00), China’s by Beijing (00:00), Argentina’s by Buenos Aires (13:00) , Japan’s by Tokyo (01:00) etc. but, curiously, the city which showed the Spanish time was Barcelona (18:00) — despite the capital being Madrid.

And even stranger was the fact it was then changed from Barcelona to Madrid on Uefa’s official website.

While it was the same story in the Europa League.

Eternal rivals, they will find anything to argue over — and fans from both sides complained at the decision.

Real Madrid fans complained the majority of cities on the map were capitals — while they also had both of last season’s finalists.

While, Barcelona argue that theirs is the most visited city in Spain and that the image was filled with countries’ most popular cities — USA had New York and Los Angeles, Brazil had Rio de Janeiro and Australia had Sydney.

Whatever their grievances, the official image now has Madrid representing Spain.

Leicester will be in the hat for the first time in history after last season’s incredible triumph, while both Manchester United and Chelsea miss out for the first time in 21 years.

Real Madrid beat Atletico in last season’s final to win their 12th title overall — while Barca were knocked out in the quarter-finals by the eventual runners-up.
