Blues boss Antonio Conte has identified the Scotland international as the perfect back up for Courtois in terms of age, and the fact Gordon will be happy to be No2 at Stamford Bridge.

An initial bid of £3m has already rejected by the Scottish giants as boss Brendan Rodgers is keen to hold onto to his first choice at least until the end of the season.

Gordon has 18 months left on his current deal at Parkhead and is expected to be offered a new deal to extend his stay in Scotland.

Chelsea are expected to test Cetlic’s resolve with an improved offer and a lucrative deal to tempt Gordon to west London.

The former Hearts youngster was facing up to the end of his career just two years ago after suffering a series of injuries during his time at Sunderland.

Gordon was out of the game for two years and trained with Old Firm rivals Rangers before joining Celts under their former manager Ronny Deila.
