Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers insists his side would be a ‘top four or top six’ team if they were in the Premier League

BRENDAN RODGERS reckons Celtic would be a ‘top four or top six’ club if they joined the Premier League.

The Scottish giants impressed the neutrals with a strong showing against Pep Guardiola’s fearsome Manchester City side on Wednesday night.

The Champions League group clash ended in a 3-3 draw, with Celtic going ahead three times and ending Guardiola’s 100 per cent record.

There has been much talk in the past of the Hoops moving south of the border with Rangers to compete with English teams.

Many reckon the Old Firm rivals would struggle in arguably the world’s most exciting and unpredictable league.

But Rodgers, who knows all about the Premiership after a spell at Liverpool, believes Celtic are more than a match for the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal – and insists they would be shoe-ins for European football each season.

Rodgers said: “Make no bones about it. If Celtic are in England, Celtic are one of the top four, six clubs there. So can you imagine then the resources playing at level, what that would produce for Celtic. It could go as far as it wants then.

“For Celtic to be in the English pyramid system is very tough because of the size of the club. We have the history, huge club, fan base, team, stadium, it would be a frightening prospect and an exciting prospect if it ever happened but for others looking through it would be very difficult to accept.

“If you are another club playing the Premier League or the Championship or League One, would you like that type of threat coming in to possibly stop you coming into the league? I don’t think you would want it and that is the reality. So I think it is always going to be difficult to get that across.”
