THE smell of success?
Wacky La Liga debutants CD Leganes, who will be playing in the top-flight for the first time in their 88-year history, have launched their new home shirt for the forthcoming 2016/17 season which incredibly comes complete with a SCRATCH ‘N’ SNIFF badge on the front.

And what does it smell like? Freshly-cut grass, apparently.

Known as ‘Los Peperioneros’ (which translates as the Cucumber Growers), their tiny 8,138 capacity stadium on the outskirts of Madrid will host Lionel Messi’s Barcelona and Cristiano Ronaldo’s Real Madrid this season after they finished in second place in the Segunda Division last term.

The club’s Marketing and Communications director Daniel Abanda said: “(Manufacturers) Joma proposed the idea of having a badge on the new shirts which tasted and smelled of something, as we were playing next season in the Primera Division for the first time.

“The idea fitted really well with how we see ourselves. A close-knit club, with a sense of fun, and with a desire to do things differently as we have been doing since we were in the Segunda Division B (third tier of Spanish football).

“The response from the fans on the first day was spectacular with enormous queues at the stadium shop. We are where we want to be, we want to stay close to our fans and help make them smile.”
Let’s just hope notorious scratch ‘n’ sniffer Joachim Low does not become their manager at some point this season and release his own range of trousers…
