Last year he was announced as the new Germany captain and has been leading the national squad through their 2018 World Cup campaign.
Since his arrival at Allianz Arena in 2011, Neuer has been instrumental in helping the German giants win five consecutive Bundesliga titles.
He kept 14 clean sheets in 26 league games last season before it was ended prematurely by injury.
Although he is still out of commission he is expected to return in time for Bayern’s campaign for a sixth league title in August.
Neuer is the fourth goalkeeper to lead Bayern following the lead of Oliver Kahn, Raimond Aumann and Sepp Maier.
