The German giants tweeted: “Manuel Neuer suffered a foot injury during training today and will not travel to Schalke.

“He will undergo further examination tomorrow.”

And German publication Bild believe the injury is worse than first feared with Neuer braced for an operation.

It will come as a huge blow for both the captain and under pressure boss Carlo Ancelotti.

Neuer was ruled out for the rest of the season last April with a broken foot he picked up in the Champions League defeat to Real Madrid.

The injury threatens to pile further misery on Ancelotti who is facing question marks over his job after Bayern’s sluggish start to the season.

It comes after the club failed to progress past the Champions League quarter-finals last campaign.

The Bavarian's have won three out of their opening four matches after suffering a defeat against Hoffenheim.

And star striker Robert Lewandowski could be on his way out of the club with Europe's biggest sides ready to snatch his signature.
