The 36-year-old has just six months remaining on his contract at LA Galaxy.

When asked by LA press if the rumours were true, Cole said: “Yeah, I’m just waiting to see, keep my options open.

“It’s six months left here, so it’s something I’m thinking about yeah.”

Ex-Chelsea full-back, Cole, joined the MLS side last January from Italian side Roma.

Cole has a glittering CV – winning a hat-trick of Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy and three World Cup appearances for his country.

The Birmingham boss expressed his interest in signing England’s most capped full-back – to add some steel to the side that slumped to 19th in the Championship last season.

Speaking to the Birmingham Mail last month, former Tottenham manager, Redknapp said: “Someone mentioned him and I thought ‘that is an interesting player, for sure’. You can’t beat a bit of quality.

“And for me he was possibly the best left back in the world a few years ago at one time when he was at Chelsea. I know Ashley, he’s a great lad and he could certainly play at this level - no problem.”

Cole earns under £300,000 a year in the USA, due to the league's 'Designated Player Rule' or 'Beckham Rule'.

The rule states that MLS clubs are allowed a limited number of players whose wages are outside the salary cap.

Since Galaxy already have high earners Giovani Dos Santos ($3,750,000) and Romain Alessandrini ($1,669,400), Cole is on a lower wage.
