His family have been desperately searching the waters in a vain bid to try to find him, and even set up a Getjackback Facebook page to help publicise their cause.

And word of their plight reached Arsenal boss Wenger, who took time out to write a heartfelt message to the 23-year-old’s mother Hester offering his support.

Wenger wrote: “Although I did not have the privilege of knowing Jack personally, I am aware that he enthusiastically followed the fortunes of his team, and for this we are extremely grateful.

“I know that words mean so little at times such as these, but I do wish you to know that our thoughts are with you at this very sad and difficult time.”

Jack’s family are prepared for the worst, and a close friend said the gesture from Wenger has provided a huge comfort.

The friend said: “The letter arrived today from Arsenal Football Club, and Jack’s mummy Hester asked for it to be shared on the Getjackback Facebook page.

“Jack was a massive Arsenal fan, and obviously a very keen footballer. Something like this means a lot to the family.”

Specialist search teams are continuing to comb the river during daylight hours in an effort to find the youngster’s body.

The friend added: “The support the family has received has been phenomenal. Everyone has been devastated by this.”
