Wenger, 68, spoke of taking a small break from football following his exit, but the workaholic has now given the green light for a European heavyweight to give him a fresh challenge.

He said: “It is exciting now because I can be tested again. That’s what I want in my life. I am a competitor who wants to be tested.

“I don’t know what will happen but I’m in front of an empty page and I have to write the next chapter.

“I’m not very gifted to enjoy life and lie on the beach. I envy friends of mine who can do that.

“Very quickly I am bored because it is an addiction I have created. I have the addicted gene and you have to live with it.”

Wenger has also hinted his next club will need to have a “special” bond with style of play and the fans.

Speaking to beIN Sports, Wenger added: “A big club has to have ambition.

“To get the fan to wake up and say: ‘Ah, today my team plays and maybe I will see something special’.

“That hope that I can deliver the perfect game is my real motivator.”

Wenger’s successor Unai Emery is tasked with a complete overhaul of the Gunners squad this summer.

But former striker Kevin Campbell has backed the Spaniard to succeed.

Speaking to ESPN, he said: “Everyone talks about the leaders like Adams and Vieira — those players are not easily available.

“But I wouldn’t put it past Emery going out and finding a player  who can come in and lead the  club.

“They need experience and toughness. Because that is everything that Arsenal have lacked.”
