It reached a nadir during the 10-2 aggregate Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich earlier this season, leading to his agent Dr Erkut Sogut claiming he is a “scapegoat” for a poor team performance.

And Ozil himself, with rumours abound of his departure from the Emirates this summer, says he will continue to play and act as he sees fit despite negative press.

He told Goal: “Some people like me, some people don’t. Some people look at my body language and think I don’t care.

“There will always be criticism and there will always be praise. But what matters is what the manager tells me. I have said that numerous times.

"But what I can't understand is when people say: 'Look, he does not push anymore' or 'he does not run enough.'

"If you look at my numbers you can see I run a lot and I show a good attitude."

Ozil has a close relationship with under-fire boss Arsene Wenger, whose own future is unsure - but the 28-year-old says what happens with his manager will have bearing on whether he will stay in north London.

He added: "It does not only depend on the manager. Of course he was the one who convinced me to join Arsenal and he was a main factor for me to come here.

"He is a very experienced coach who made Arsenal one of the best clubs in the world. You must have respect for him, because he is a great manager.

"But I do not decide whether the manager stays or not. What's important for me is that we develop as a team and reach our goals."

Ozil has 11 goals and 11 assists this term, but will likely miss out on the Champions League next year as they lie in sixth - and host Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday.
