The Gunners were on the back foot after Hakan Calhanoglu broke the deadlock at the Emirates stadium.

But fortune fell in their favour when striker Welbeck appeared to take a tumble in the box… and they were awarded a penalty for it.

To the disbelief of Milan, Referee Jonas Eriksson allowed play to continue before eventually pointing to the spot.

Despite the fact that he won the penalty, it was clear that Arsenal fans did not want him to take it.

But he silenced his doubters as he confidently marched into the area and placed the ball onto the spot.

Like a natural, he sent the goalkeeper the wrong way and slotted the ball into the left corner of the net.

The goal marks his first goal in European competition since October 2014, when he netted a hat-trick against Galatasaray.

The antics at the Emirates sent some fans into meltdown, with the majority in shock that Welbeck found the net.

After the incident, Gunners icon Martin Keown admitted: “It looks like a dive. AC Milan boss Gennaro Gattuso was looking for a yellow card for the dive!”
Former Tottenham star Jermaine Jenas added: “It’s a dive, simple as that. There’s no other way to look at it. Gattuso and his players can feel like they have had one against them there. The referee and assistant have bought it.”

Gunners midfielder Jack Wilshere said: “I haven’t seen it but Danny was between the defender and the ball. We needed that.
