Arsenal and Liverpool to battle it out for Schalke star Max Meyer at end of season

ARSENAL and Liverpool will go head-to-head for Schalke star Max Meyer.

The 22-year-old can operate as an attacking midfielder, forward or even in a deep-lying playmaker role.

Meyer is out of contract at the end of the season with his cut price fee and versatility alerting the Premier League pair, claim the Daily Star.

The Schlake academy product represented Germay at the Rio Olympics after making his senior debut in 2014.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger may have stolen a march on Jurgen Klopp for the highly-rated German international.

However, Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich and AC Milan are also closely monitoring his situation.

Potential suitors hopes of bagging Meyer this summer were boosted last month after Schalke chief Christian Heidel refused to deny reports his star man could be leaving at the end of the current campaign.

He said: “Max will be deciding shortly if he wants to stay at Schalke past the summer.

CAR CRASH Arsenal and Arsene Wenger branded an ’embarrassment’ by Jamie Carragher, who believes Gunners are getting worse

“Max is very happy here, Schalke is his home, we will try to make it him as comfortable financially as possible.

“He is playing the best season of his life, and the coach has found a position for him that Max didn’t believe he could play.
“Personally, I didn’t think he could either.”

Arsenal’s hope of attracting Meyer with Champions League football next season were severely dented with their defeat in the North London derby on Saturday.

Wenger’s only realistic route back to Europe’s top table next season will come via winning the Europa League.

They face Swedish outfit Ostersunds in the last 32 on Thursday.
