Armistice Day: England rugby team join Three Lions footballers and cricketers in wearing poppies

ENGLAND rugby stars followed the Three Lions footballers and cricketers in wearing poppies in honour of Armistice Day.

The Red Rose, skippered by Dylan Hartley, proudly displayed the symbol on their jackets during the anthems at Twickenham.

England’s footballers last night defied Fifa by wearing poppies on their sleeves.

And cricketers on tour in India had a poppy stitched into their collars.

World football’s governing body deem poppies a “political, religious or commercial message” and that is why teams are not allowed to wear them.

But Gareth Southgate's men, who had a request to wear the symbol turned down by Fifa, wore black armbands with the image on last night in their 3-0 win over Scotland at Wembley.

The visitors did likewise and both now face a points deduction, fine or both.

There were no similar rules surrounding the rugby team.

Prince Harry, also wearing a poppy, was at Twickenham to see England and he paid his respects to the fallen before the game.
