Italy weren’t expected make any real waves in France, but their professional performance in beating highly-rated Belgium 2-0 in their opener earned them many plaudits.

They then put in another disciplined display to knock out holders Spain in the last-16 before falling in the quarter-finals after a penalty shoot-out defeat to Germany.

Italy were in 14th place when Conte took over in August 2014 and led them up four places by the following March — only for them to tumble down to a lowly 17th three months later.

However, their performances in France will surely see them rise up the rankings.

And, should they place ninth, Conte will earn a massive payday.

Their only defeat in 90 minutes at Euro 2016 — in their final group match against Ireland — could yet harm their chances of substantial progress.

While France would likely end their chances with victory in the tournament.

The hosts are currently ranked 17th and are preparing for a mouthwatering semi-final against Germany.

Victory in Marseille would put France in  a tremendous position with either Wales or Portugal lying in wait for the final.
