Antonio Conte takes blame for Chelsea’s 3-0 drubbing at Newcastle on final day of Premier League season

ANTONIO CONTE has said that his team lost to Newcastle on Saturday because he “wasn’t able to convey that determination” to his players.

The Blues boss has been hotly tipped to leave Stamford Bridge at the end of the season after enduring a frustrating league title defence.

Antonio Conte has taken the blame for his side’s drubbing by Newcastle

Speaking after the game Conte, who made eight changes to his first team,  admitted that Chelsea deserved to lose.

He said: “We deserved to lose because our start wasn’t good and we suffered by losing every ball. Newcastle were more determined than us.

“We didn’t lose our Champions League place today, we had chances in the last two games, but to finish the season this way is not good for anyone connected to the club.

“When you are at the end of the season, this performance can happen, but the first person to answer for this must be the coach. I wasn’t able to convey that determination to my players.”

Cahill admitted Chelsea’s performance was below par

While Chelsea skipper Gary Cahill echoed the comments of his manager, labelling the west London’s performance “below par.”
He said: “That was a below par performance, and for whatever reason we were way off the pace today. Newcastle started very well and we were sloppy.
“It looked to me like everyone had one eye on the cup final which is very dangerous and we were lucky the game was kind of irrelevant. Had the Champions League truly been on the line it would have been very difficult to take.
“We came here to give a performance and take three points. Prior to the Huddersfield game we were in good form but that’s not an excuse.”

When asked about the Blues’ mentality ahead of their trip to Wembley, Cahill added: “We have got a massive week now to prepare for a cup final. I’d certainly like to think people gave their all today, and to not do so would be extremely disappointing.
“I don’t care if you’re a top class player or a basic player, hard work is just a basic of the game.”
