The ball-boy prepared to serve and had Federer creased with laughter at the other end – by cheekily knocking a ball away for his replacement ball-boy Murray to pick up.
Australian Open champion Federer, 35 was then somehow aced but still won the decisive, second-set tie-break.
Now Murray, 29, is targeting next week’s Monte Carlo Masters after returning smoothly from his elbow injury.
The Scot’s last match was a shock second-round against Canadian Vasek Pospisil in last month’s BNP Paribas Open.
After playing ‘The Match for Africa 3’ in Zurich in aid of the Roger Federer Foundation, Murray said:
“I’m hoping, if I keep progressing as I have with the elbow, to play Monte Carlo,” said the Scot.
“If not, then I just need to stay patient and I’ll try the following week. I’m getting there, I just have to go slowly.”
