South African Henri Schoeman overtook the pair to claim victory in this final race.
That denied an exhausted, dazed and disoriented Jonny the overall crown – as he needed to win and see Spain’s Mario Mola finish outside the top three.
Instead, with the brothers crossing in second place, Mola took the title by just four points after coming fifth.
It was Alistair, though, who won the hearts of social media for catching up with his brother and showing a compassionate, family-first attitude. in hauling him all the way to the finishing line.
Brownless senior said: “If he’d conked out before the finish line and there wasn’t medical support it could have been really dangerous.

“It was a natural human reaction to my brother but for anyone I would have done the same thing. I think it’s as close to death as you can be in sport.”
Jonny was taken to hospital but from there tweeted his thanks to Alistair: “Not how I wanted to end the season, but gave it everything. Thanks @AliBrownleetri, your loyalty is incredible.”
Now Jonny is behind only Wimbledon and Rio champion Andy Murray (9/4), Olympic ‘double double ‘ gold winner Mo Farah (13/5) and record-breaking, four-time Olympic cycling champ Laura Trott (6/1) in the SPOTY odds.
Fifth favourite is Nick Skelton, 58, Britain’s oldest Olympic gold winner since 1908 after his summer success in the equestrian.
