After Queen of the South goalkeeper Sam Henderson is injured by runaway cow, take a look back at the most bizarre injuries sustained by footballers

INJURIES in football are nothing new, in fact, they’re pretty commonplace.

Pulled hamstrings, torn ligaments or even just a virus… there are a host of reasons a player might miss a game or two.

Sam Henderson was due to be on the bench
Queen of the South

But Queen of the South goalkeeper Sam Henderson has a truly unique excuse for potentially missing this weekend’s game against Dunfermline… after he was hit by a cow.

Incredibly, Henderson, 19, was dumped on his backside following the collision at his dad’s farm, injuring his shoulder.

On the back of that truly outstanding story, take a look back at a handful of the most hilarious injuries ever sustained by footballers down the years…

FLAT ON HIS GRASS

GARETH BALE can’t stop getting injured at Real Madrid.

But once, in 2016, the La Liga club claimed the GRASS was the reason for his latest affliction.

Real Madrid switched to a new part-grass, part-artificial surface imported from Italy last summer, and there are fears the composition of the turf is aggravating Bale.

No, really…

NOT A PRET-TEA SIGHT

Enner Valencia gets stuck in with then West Ham boss Sam Allardyce watching on

ENNER VALENCIA had a case for most bizarre injury ever, a few seasons ago.

The ex-West Ham forward cut his big toe on a broken mug after a good, old-fashioned English cuppa.

Then boss Sam Allardyce said: “It is something we didn’t expect.”

You don’t say…

WRIGHT WAY TO DO IT?

Richard Wright is arguably more famous for his bonkers injury than his footballing exploits

REMEMBER Richard Wright? Of course you do.

In fact, he’s was still going until 2016, at Manchester City of all places, getting paid a small fortune to warm the reserve team bench.

Anyway, during his Everton days, Wright was going through his on-field, pre-match warm up.

After leaping like a salmon to tip a shot over the bar, he falls back onto a “NOT IN USE” sign and injures himself, ruling himself out of the game.

Maybe that sign was more of an omen, as he’s remained “not in use” ever since.

DEADLY DIET

Dave Beasant during happier times, rather than his salad-making injury

ONE night, all Wimbledon stopper Dave Beasant wanted was a nice healthy salad.

Good man.

But in making his leafy dinner, he dropped a glass bottle of salad cream on his foot — (somehow) tearing a tendon.

He missed two months of action.

Stick to the fast food in future, Dave.

DRILL-IANT IDEA

Darius Vassell had the madcap idea of popping a blister using power tools

DARIUS VASSELL had a novel idea once upon a time…

If you’ve ever stepped out onto a football pitch, you’ll know how sore those blood blisters can be.

When the former Aston Villa man decided enough was enough, he took a POWER DRILL to it.

A power drill. No needles, pins or little knives here. Only power tools.

Either way, he did himself more damage than anticipated, ruling himself out for several games.

FULLY EVO-LVED?

Rio Ferdinand injured himself without even leaving the sofa

RIO FERDINAND once injured himself playing football, there’s no headline there.

What if I told you he injured himself playing football in a video game — Pro Evolution Soccer, to be exact.

Well, Ferdinand managed to strain his knee after having his leg up on the coffee table for too long.

Next time, how about taking a quick break in between matches?

DOG-EAT-DOG WORLD

Liam Lawrence was forced into a dogged return to the pitch following accident

WE all know football can be a dog-eat-dog world, but this is just ridiculous.

Never far away from the headlines, then Stoke-star Liam Lawrence managed to trip over his pet pooch in the middle of the night and fall down the stairs.

Boss Tony Pulis said: “I don’t think anything is broken, but it’s very disappointing.”

You could say Lawrence was, ahem, in the dog house…

WATER FOOL

Kevin Kyle injured a private place with just a bowl of water

BACK in his Sunderland days, Kevin Kyle once had to miss a game due to… a bowl of water.

That’s right, his eight-month-old son kicked a bowl of boiling H20 onto his crotch.

A club insider said: “He was struggling to move without pain, let alone run. But he is very embarrassed about this coming out.”

TAKE A STEP BACK

Alex Stepney somehow injured his face, I thought it would be the lack of gloves...

APPARENTLY goalkeepers are really prone to bonkers injuries.

Back in the day, Manchester United stopper Alex Stepney dislocated his JAW —by shouting orders at his defence.

That is some intense yelling…

THAT’S A STRETCH

Leroy Lita injured himself in bed... no not like that

GETTING a good night’s sleep is one of the best feelings on the planet, right?

That moment when you stretch in the morning and everything clicks into place.

Not if you’re Leroy Lita — while performing the pre-breakfast stretch, he managed to injure himself.

And to top it off, boss Steve Coppell said: “It is not an injury that should be ridiculed or made light of.”

BRY-GHT IDEA

I wonder if Bryan Robson ever forgave Paul Gascoigne for his bedroom antics

DURING England’s 1990 World Cup preparations, Bryan Robson was given the (impossible) task of rousing Paul Gascoigne from his slumber.

Never an easy job, Robson lifted the bed in a bid to get Gazza hopping around again.

In putting the bed back to his original position, he dropped it on his toe, breaking it, ruling him out for weeks.

Two bed related injuries? That’s just lazy.
